Unit 62 Market Research Report

Now our videos been cretaed. We are now coming to the finishing line of the project, with one important stage to complete- market research. Even though we have acomplished most of the project, the last stages are just as important. Yes, we have planned our storylines, and yes we have researched to insure we get the very best our of Adobe Premeire, however none of that is no good, if our intended audience isn't satisified. Thus we need to find this out by doing a little bit of research.

We had been asked to report our research and find out what the public, teachers, students and most importantly our client's views and opinions on our videos.

 We have also been asked to upload our videos to dropbox so we are able to show our video to students and staff in and around school. However, the problem we had was that this would take a very long time to upload to dropbox. Therefore, me and Sam decided to upload our videos to youtube as a quicker alternative. In addition to this we have decided to create a survey using Surveymonkey. This means that we will be able to get responses from people face-to-face and also from sending surveys (which will allow us to gather more feedback from more people). By acomplishing this research, I am reciving quantititve date from both the interview and the survey.

Here is an example of how we created a survey;

Surveymonkey is easy to use as we both have experince using this site from previous projects. It is simply and quick, as all you need to do is to simply add/ edit questions and add/ edit the number of pages.

In terms of our client, We have sent him an email requesting for a meeting to discuss and present our video. we would wan't to meet his objectives for this video, so it is important to get his personal opinions on the video, seems as he is our client. Below is the e-mail the GigaX team sent to Mr Hutchinson;

Dear Mr Hutchinson,

We are pleased to inform you that due to the setbacks in our digital graphics production, we have been able to complete our digital video project for you somewhat earlier than expected. As a result, we would like to schedule a meeting with you some time this week in order to show you our two finished products. During this meeting, we would like to ask you for some general feedback.

In the mean time, we would like to thank you for your support in allowing us to capture the relevant footage for our project and for making our shooting as smooth as possible.

Other than that, is there any particular time that a meeting would be possible, taking around 20 minutes?

Thank you,

GigaXStudios.

In addition to this, I have recently spoke to him on the way to my lesson and he told me that he has seen the video and is very happy with the "quality" and the fact "that he is now famous". He also said that he has yet to decide when we can meet to discuss the videos in detail, and will let us know in the near furture. For now, I will just have to work and gather the research from other people.

During this stage of the project we have had our own expectations and predictions on the responses we collect. We expect to be a mixture of positive and negative feedback. Some will probably dislike the ideas we have put together whilst others will believe they are creative. The results we collect should be reliable data when getting it from face-to-face. In terms of the data from the surveys, we are expecting less reliable data as some people do surveys half heartedly, meaning that they put any old answers thinking they are helping as they are giving us an extra response, but in actual fact we only want true well thought out answers.

I am expecting overall good responses. I believe that I have met the project briefs demands. I also beleive that my video is entertaining and relfects the ethos of the school's PE department.  On the ohter hand, the market research may say otherwise, and I may be shocked on what the viewer think. This is something I will find out pretty soon.

To collect the data face-to-face, We decided to head up to the PE department to see if any one was available to view our video. Unfortunately there was no one there, so we decided to try and see if anyone was in our common room. Fortunately Sam managed to get a student to look over his video whilst I managed to get 2 members of staff.

To record this, we decided to use each others iPad. I came fully prepared with an app which allowed me to record audio quickly, in small enough files that can be sent via e-mail. Sam wasn't aware of this app, so alternatively he video recorded mine. Below is the recording of what the viewers of my video thought...

From this feedback, it seems that my video has ticked the right boxes. They were ingadged throughout the video, and never got distracted. They laugthed throughout which suggested that it was entertaining. As a result, this means that I have promoted the PE department in an entertaining and unusual way, which reflects the thoughts and ideas shown in the pre-production stage.

Throughout the presentation of my video, they both took it slightly light-hearted. They made comments suggesting the video was boring and badly edited. However, they insured me that they were only joking by making these comments, and insured me that they really enjoyed the video and was really entertained by it.

One comment made which stood out to me, was made by the man (Rob). The comment he made was "it makes me wonn put my kit on". This was somewhat pleasing to hear, as the concept of the video is to make people wan't to do more sports. In addition to this, it also suggests that the video has inspired and entertained an older audeince, which means that I have prdouced a video that is sutibale for older people. I hope now that this is refleted in the survey responses, and I also hope that the younger audience enjoys it just as much.

Once I arrived back in the class-room I recived feedback from my fellow class mates about my survey (who I aksed to fill out for extra data). They pointed out some errors I mae in the questionaire and I have now realised that there are spelling mistakes in my survey. This is something that I cannot change unless I delete the current data received for the questions. I am disappointed with this as this doesn't reflect the professionalism I have carried throughout this project. I have also put biased options for answers. For example, I have asked the audeince to tick the words that they associate my video with. I have provided options which are postive words such as "entertaining". The class told me that this comes across as slightly biased of me, despite the fact that I have provided an option for them to put their own choice of word. In a way I agrre with this point, as overall I am not happy with the quality of my questionaire. I rushed it too much, and I should of looked over the questionaire before I sent it out. I made errors and come across biased which may affect he audeinces responses. I wan't to get the most reliable data from the surveys, but by making mistakes and coming across as biased certainly doesn't help. Nevertheless, I still beleive that I will gather decent data to analyse.

In terms of looking over my respones SuerveyMonkey provides charts and graphs, which presents me with all th stats that I need to know.

Here is an example;

Whilst these charts are useful, they are not very big and are watermarked when expanded. To overcome this I have copied the data of my results and created my own charts using Excel.

I have chosen to do my charts in a pie format, as I thought they allowed me to see the difference in numbers for each answer clearer than other chart formats.

Before I looked at the data I thought that people will have a mixture of feelings towards the video. I was expecting some negative responses, some good and some irrelevant and unreliable.

Here are some of  the charts I have created, which stand out to me;

Q: What words would you use to describe the video?

This chart is much more easier to read and to understand compared to the charts provided by SurveyMonkey.

The answers I recived to this question paticularly stood out to me as I am both pleased and dissatisfied. Most people beleived that the video was exciting, interesting and strange. This is a similar response to what I recived from my interview. Everone seems to enjoy the humour and are engadged by the plots uniue touch. On the other hand, this question reflects what my class mates said about me being biased. As you can see, most of the words (all but one) were positive. The fact that the positive ones were most common, not only could suggest that my video is a sucess, but could also suggest that my class mates' points were correct and I have presented a biased set of data for this question.

Who do you think is the intended target audience for this video?

 This data is also interesting. Infact I am most happy with the results of this question. One of the objectives both the project brief and our client requested was to make our video aimed at a wide audience. From childeren to the elderley, our video has to ingadge and attract people and widen their knowledge on Bluecoat's PE ethos and legacy. Looking over the results, the most poplar answers to this question was "childeren" teens" and "adults". This shows that a wide audeience would enjoy this video, and is noticed that there are features used that I considered to attract people of all ages. To have 3 different audeicnes attracted by this video, would mean that I have met the project breifs demand and one of our clirent's wishes.

I am suprised that one of the least popular answers was "toddlers". Part of our story includes and alien like character coming down to Earth and making a fool of himself in some of the sports he participates in. I thought this would entertain this young audience and would be there type of humour. Nonetheless, this data still shows that people agree with me, that I have produced a video that is suitbale and attractive to a wide range of people.

The chosen audio suite the video...

I was quite pleased with the audio I chose for this video. I beleive I chose a fantasticaudio track which kept the positive and paey vibe throughout the video. I beleive that the audio flowed smoothly and connected with the footage. When I s preseneted my video to my class mates eariler in the project, they seemd to enjoy the credits with the music choice I made. Thus I was sure that the music was suitable there, but since then I changed my vieo and had the musci tack playing throughout the whole video. My intentions was to make my video much more fluent and continunity, however I wasn't sure if the audience would agree.

Fortunatley, I can see from my data that most did. In fact 50% of the audience beleived that the audio suited the video. I am happy with this as the number of people who agreed with this, is far greater than the number who disagree. In addition to this, I am also satisfied that no one had said that they strongly disagree.

25% said that they neither agreed or disagreed. I think maybe that I should of left this option out as everyone must have an opinion as to weather they agree or not. Again, this may be an easy way of getting the survey done? Depite this, only a small minority disagreed and the number of people who agreed is a satifying number.

That small minority who did disagree, still exsits depite being small. Maybe if I was to do this project again, I would send another survey out asking why the audio was not sutbiable. That way I will be pleasing everyone, and my video would be to everyone's standards.

Has this video affected your opinion on the School's PE dept.?

 The results of this question were quite close. Thankfully, just under half had been affected and now see the PE department in a better light. maybe they wasn't sure how kind or supportive the department was. Maybe they wasn't awareof the sports in PE or maybe they had no ideas on what the department can achive for it's students. Either way, after watchin my promotional vide they can now see all this and are more likely to get involved with the department more often.

The number of people who said that the video did not afect their opnions was not far behind the number who said they see the departnement in a better light. Of course I know that my video will not reach out to everyone, despite the fact that I aim to affect as many people as posssible. Maybe these people already know alot about the department and the sports and areas mentioned in my video. They may have a storng opinion of the deparemtne and knoweldge of what they do and strive to achieve. If that is the case then they won't need a video telin them what they already know. Furthermore, only a small number of people said that they now have doubts about the PE department. I don't see my self why they would, however there opinion counts, so I would look over my video myself and see what disheartends the department. It is possible that they did not like the plot or the style of my video. They may have not connected with the video, thus they did not connect with the department, which has left them thinking that the deparmtnet isn't for them. Consequently this may put doubts in their minds about the department overall.

Do you feel that this video has sucessflly promoted Bluecoat's PE dept.?

Based on this question, there is no doubt about it that I have produced a fantastic, strong video, which meets the project breifs objectives. Before we started the project our client said ""Within the PE Faculty we want to raise the profile of sport both within the school but more predominantly with the wider public. We hope to showcase the good work and success that already goes on but to promote our ethos and vision of Sport and PE for future generations. We aim to show the benefits of a healthy lifestyle and fall in line with the deliverance of the Olympic legacy of using sport as tool to improve social and moral attitudes as well as being fun". I beleive that I have acomplished this via my video, in a unique twist which stands out from an ordinary promotional video. I have shown a range of sports which allow students of all capabilitites to particiapte to learn and become more helathy and active. I have also interviewed two passionate members of staff who work withing this faculty, and there responses, relfect that this department aim to achive high, and strive to make sports not only fun for the students but also benififcial for their carrears and lifestyle.

By having a clear result such as the one above, indicates that the audeice can see these achivemtns in a 3 minute video, created and produced by the GigaX team.

In conclusion, I am produ of what  I have achived. The audeince overall agree that this is a sucessful video promoting the school. The audio suites the style of the video, and the overally viewing experince shows great professionlism, and ingadges an audience of many ages. My surevey results were plaseing, depsite my surevy not being professioanl as the video itself. It had few errors, whcih will not be tolerated by media companies within the professional industry. In terms of the interview results, I am also satisfied with the results. These results are not only more reliable but also shows the enjoyment and entertainment a viewer get from watching my video.

My quantitative research has been a sucess, and my bliefs that I have created a professional video is reflceted by the views of the public.
